Austria lose second friendly against Germany 0:5

Compared with the narrow 2:3 defeat two days earlier, Head Coach Roger Bader made several changes to the squad. Dominic Zwerger, Oliver Achermann, Paul Huber and Lukas Kainz, all of whom have been involved since the first week of preparation, were given a rest, as was Clemens Unterweger.

After a good first period, in which Austria came within millimetres of taking the lead when Benjamin Baumgartner’s shot slipped through Philipp Grubauer’s catching glove, Germany extended their lead to 2:0 in the middle period.

Austria registered more shots on goal during those 20 minutes, but the puck simply would not cross the line. On the contrary, they conceded a shorthanded goal in the 26th minute. Following a German puck win in front of the blue line, Krämmer made it 2:0 to the hosts in the 32nd minute.

At the start of the final period, Felix Maxa’s close-range shot clipped the crossbar. Almost immediately at the other end, Austria conceded to make it 0:3 and found themselves 0:4 behind seconds later.

The puck simply would not bounce Austria’s way on this Saturday evening, as was also the case with Thimo Nickl’s shot off the post in the 55th minute. Austria were already 0:5 behind after Samanski scored for Germany on the power play.

Head Coach Roger Bader: “Germany’s win was deserved. We have to admit that. On the other hand, the result is far too emphatic. It does not reflect the performance we put in. We deserved to score goals, hit the post three times alone and could have scored three or four goals. One reason was Grubauer, who prevented that. I could have lived with a one- or two-goal margin.”

Brian Lebler: “We were not smart enough today and made too many mistakes. Germany are a good team. We have to learn from the defeat and continue to build.”
