Austria lose 1:6 to Denmark at the Four Nations Tour­na­ment in Oslo

Head Coach Roger Baderstarted goalie David Kickert against Denmark, with Benedikt Oschgan serving as backup. The Danes made a high-pressure start in the opening minutes and had an early power play, which the ÖEHV side successfully killed off. 

After Austria’s best chance through Felix Maxa, who was denied by keeper Frederik Dichow Nissen, and a big save by Kickert at the other end, Denmark took a 1:0 lead in the __OEHV_NUM_O_A__th minute: Anton Linde scored with a well-placed shot after an ideal pass from KAC forward Mathias From. Towards the end of the first period, Austria had to kill their second penalty but held on to the narrow deficit.

Right at the start of the second period, David Kickert made another good save. The keeper had no chance at 0:2, as Kristian Jensen scored from close range after a fine passing combination (29'). Denmark added another through Malte Setkov, who converted a rebound to make it 3:0 (33'). Just under two minutes before the end of the period, Paul Huber had a great chance to score Austria’s first goal, but Frederik Dichow Nissen made a fantastic save. 

Austria faced another penalty kill in the final minute. Joachim Blichfeld made it 4:0 with a powerful shot 29 seconds before the second buzzer (40'). In the final period, Austria got on the scoresheet as Nico Feldner reduced the deficit to 1:4 from a tight angle (44'). Austria were unable to turn the game around, and the Danes pulled further away with a quick double. Jerry Välipirtti deflected the puck into the net with his body to make it 5:1; the referees awarded the goal after a video review (49'). 51 seconds later, Christopher Frederiksen made it 6:1 (50'), which was also the final score.

Head Coach Roger Bader: "We knew before the tournament that it would be very difficult to win a game with our young, inexperienced group. Compared to the Deutschland Cup in November, we have changed ten players. They are all talented players and challengers, but most of them play on the fourth line for their clubs and were at times overwhelmed by the standard here. We certainly had opportunities against France yesterday; today, Denmark were better and we have to acknowledge that. Nevertheless, the results were too emphatic overall. The first period was relatively even, as was the final period. Denmark were stronger in the middle period, when we again had ten minutes in which we conceded three goals. The Danes were well staffed. At this level, mistakes are punished with goals. These are important experiences for the players to take away with them and, hopefully, learn from. They have seen what is required to be successful at this level. That alone means the tournament has fulfilled its purpose."
