Austria lose 0:2 to Germany despite a strong perfor­mance

Just 18 seconds had been played when Nico Feldner received the first penalty of the game, heading to the penalty box for high-sticking.

Germany immediately capitalised on the power play to take the lead after 1:11, and remained on top in the minutes that followed. Parker Tuomie eventually made it 2:0 in the 6th minute following an excellent pass from Mario Zimmermann.

The Austrians grew into the game minute by minute, clearing their own zone and repeatedly posing a threat in front of the opposition net. Particularly after the first intermission, they at times pinned Germany in their own zone and pressed for a goal to reduce the deficit.

Only the goals were missing

After Germany's Moritz Wirth was sent off for two minutes, Austria were almost impossible to dislodge from the offensive zone and repeatedly tested German netminder Maximilian Franzreb.

Whenever Germany had the puck and drove towards the net, David Madlener was there and showed great awareness. In the final period, Austria caused their opponents even greater problems, but the goals simply would not come. They ultimately had to settle for a narrow 0:2 defeat and will be pushing for their first win since 2019 in Landshut on Saturday.

Head Coach Roger Bader: "We were already on top in the second period with 12:6 shots on goal. The longer the game went on, the better we became. The game started unfortunately with an unnecessary foul. We did not play the box play well on the power play and conceded the first goal. Generally, we were not yet as well organised in the first period because it is simply a higher level. It is faster and more intense than against Italy and Slovenia. We made a few adjustments and some tactical changes. As a result, we became more compact, improved defensively and created our chances. Firstly, you can see how the team is progressing from game to game. We have better opponents every week and that is good. We want to gradually reach the level required in Tampere. Secondly, the players are in a selection process and can showcase themselves."

Manuel Ganahl: "I think we showed relatively too much respect at the start, found it difficult to get into the game and quickly fell 0:2 behind. We then spent virtually the entire rest of the game chasing the deficit. We did create one or two chances, but I think there needs to be more; we have to want it more. But that is what these games are for. We adapted to the speed relatively quickly. After twelve, 15 minutes, we got into the game, matched the pace and raised our willingness to play physically and our aggression a little, and matched them well for the rest of the game."
