Austria finish third at the Deutsch­land Cup 2024 after defeat to Germany

The result is by no means reflective of the Austrians' performance, as they went toe-to-toe with Germany for long spells. Despite a strong start, David Kickert conceded an unfortunate goal. The puck slipped underneath his catching glove for Germany's 1:0.

After the first break, Austria's netminder was powerless to prevent the 0:2, but Austria continued to fight back and create chances. In the 27th minute, Germany's Stefan Loibl was ejected from the ice with a game misconduct penalty following a hard knee-on-knee hit against Lucas Thaler. However, the Red-White-Reds were unable to convert the five-minute power play into goals. "That power play may have knocked us off track a little," said Head Coach Roger Bader after the game.

Instead of pulling one back, Austria found themselves 0:3 behind after two periods. They wanted to win the final period and managed to create more chances than their opponents, but the goals came at the other end.

Germany ultimately prevailed 6:0, but Austria finished the tournament in third place thanks to their win over Denmark.

Head Coach Roger Bader: "The defeat is very bitter. It was not a 0:6 game. Nor was it 0:3 after two periods. Of course, we have to hold ourselves accountable for not scoring a goal, especially on the five-minute power play. Germany came out very aggressively after their two defeats and did not want to leave their home tournament with three losses. They were a strong opponent, and perhaps we lacked a little freshness. I am satisfied with the first period. In the first ten minutes, we played exactly as we had planned. We set out to win the final period as well and had more chances. It is bitter to lose that period 0:3 too. Overall, however, I can draw a positive conclusion from the Deutschland Cup. We played two and a half good games."
