Austria finish the 2022 World Cham­pi­onship in 11th place

While the 2022 World Championship is not yet over, it has already made history for Austrian ice hockey. A point against ice hockey powerhouse USA, the first-ever win over the next powerhouse, Czechia, and a point against Latvia, who have been ever-present in the top division since 1997, had already made headlines and produced Austria's strongest World Championship showing since 2004 before the decisive game against Great Britain. 

The 5:3 win over the British turned the World Championship into an early summer fairytale. Top-division status is secured and, thanks to the many outstanding results, Austria can now even celebrate 11th place, their best placing since the 2004 World Championship. In the past two decades, they have only been better placed in 2003, when they finished the World Championship in 10th place.

With 3 goals and 6 assists, Peter Schneider also reached 4rd place in the scoring standings after the preliminary round. Schneider scored Austria's first World Championship goal in the 20th minute of the 1:3 game against Sweden, converted the decisive penalty against Czechia and pulled one back to make it 3:4 against Norway in the 57th minute. The 31-year-old shares 4th place with Slovakia's Juraj Slafkovsky.

There are no games in either Tampere or Helsinki this Wednesday. All quarter-final games are scheduled for Thursday, followed by the semi-finals on Saturday and the bronze-medal and gold-medal games on Sunday. ORF will broadcast six of the eight remaining games live:
