Austria end World Cham­pi­onship with 3:2 shoot-out win over Denmark

43:12 shots on goal clearly underline the Austrians' dominance in their final World Championship game. However, Denmark goaltender Mila Petersen proved too strong on too many occasions. Austria converted their superiority as early as the fifth minute, taking a 1:0 lead thanks to Laura Nagy's goal. However, it lasted just 84 seconds.

In the middle period, they even fell 1:2 behind. Head Coach Mario Bellina's team battled against the looming defeat in the final period, but trailed until 60 on the clock, when Artemis Tekin rescued her team and sent the game into overtime.

It remained goalless, as did Austria's first two attempts in the shoot-out. Vanessa Pick converted the third penalty, which proved to be the game-winning goal, as no player scored after her and Rosina Fichtinger did not concede.

Having lost the head-to-head meeting, Austria finish the World Championship in fourth place behind Hungary, who, like Austria, have eight points.

Head Coach Marion Bellina: "We are very satisfied with how the tournament went, even if it did not work out in the end for us to take home a medal. It was a tremendous performance by the girls, who improved from game to game. We tried to take the pressure off them for this game, but a certain nervousness did creep in. We took too many penalties, which also put an added strain on others. Our two goaltenders performed superbly and supported us optimally in every game, so that we had the chance to win every game. We are also a little disappointed to be going home without a medal. It was in our own hands. Nevertheless, we travel home with our heads held high. For the 2006 age group, this was their final appearance at junior level, which was also a little emotional. It was and is wonderful to see how the players develop as people and as players. I think we will see some of them in the senior national team in the future."
