Austria battle for their 36th win in their 51st meeting

Austria vs. Hungary – a match-up that can be described as a traditional rivalry in every sport. They will face each other for the 51st time overall tomorrow, Thursday. The pleasing record from an Austrian perspective: 35 wins, two draws and 13 defeats. Match number 52 follows on Friday evening, with both games broadcast live on ORF Sport+ at 18:30. Before the first meeting, it is time for a little ice hockey history. Austria and Hungary first faced each other at the European Championship in Vienna on 24 January 1927. This historic game between the two nations, once closely linked through the monarchy, ended in a clear 6:0 victory for Austria. Two years later, they met again at a European Championship, this time in Budapest. The 3:0 win again went to the red-white-red. Austria also won the last game for 13 years, on 21 February 1933 at the World Championship in Prague, 1:0 in overtime.

After the end of the war, Hungary recorded their first victory, winning 8:1 in an international friendly in Budapest. Austria enjoyed their longest run between 1979 and 2014, with 14 consecutive wins. Hungary only ended their barren spell on 8 April 2015. In spring 2022, our neighbours secured promotion to the top division by finishing 2nd at the World Championship Division IA. At the 2023 World Championship in Tampere/FIN, Hungary are Austria's final preliminary-round opponents.

For the December Break, Head Coach Kevin Constantine has nominated a young squad made up predominantly of players born around the turn of the millennium. Their most recent meeting to date came in 2021, when Austria celebrated a 7:5 victory in Vienna in preparation for Olympic qualification.
