International Ice Hockey Federation president Rene Fasel is confident that he will soon be able to announce an agreement with the National Hockey League on the return of its professionals to the Winter Olympics.

“I think we may have a decision next week. We are close to an agreement,” Fasel said on Sunday at the end of the IIHF World Championship in Riga. The next Olympic tournament will take place in Beijing in February 2022. Before the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the world’s best league had refused to interrupt its season.

This had also been viewed as a mistake in North America, given the USA’s early elimination and Canada’s semi-final defeat to Germany. “For me, the Olympic Games are a tournament for the very best. And that is how it must remain,” Fasel said.
