2 of 5 debutants score – Austria beat Hungary 4:1

A perfect start for the ÖEHV side at the Three Nations Tournament in Oslo (NOR). After falling 0:1 behind, returning player Benjamin Nissner first levelled the scores with 17 minutes played after a perfect assist from Vinzenz Rohrer. In the middle period, Nissner then set up Rohrer perfectly for 2:1. Debutant Johannes Neumann made it 3:1 with a fierce shot into the right corner with 56 minutes played, while Lenz Moosbrugger sealed the 4:1 final score with an empty-net goal. On Saturday at 16:00, they will face hosts Norway for the tournament title.

Five debutants, an average age of 24,8 years – once again, Head Coach Roger Bader's courage in throwing young players in at the deep end paid off. In a game marked by numerous penalties in the opening 40 minutes, Austria were aggressive on the penalty kill. Although their neighbours capitalised on their second power play to take a 1:0 lead with 6 minutes played, they gave their opponents hardly any shots on goal while shorthanded overall.

Austria gradually took control of the game and, following a perfect assist from Vinzenz Rohrer, Benjamin Nissner scored the deserved equaliser with 17 minutes played on his national team comeback.

The two reversed roles on the power play in the middle period. Nissner spotted Rohrer standing free and set up his team-mate, who fired home unstoppably for 2:1. After the second interval, Hungary came out more aggressively again. Austria weathered this phase and continued to create chances. Johannes Neumann, who captained the U20 national team at the World Championship Division IA in December, converted one of them with a fierce shot into the right corner to make it 3:1.

In the closing stages, Hungary pulled their goalkeeper, allowing another debutant to get on the scoresheet. Lenz Moosbrugger scored into the empty net to seal the 4:1 final score.

Head Coach Roger Bader: “That was a very good, solid performance today and I am very pleased with it. I am proud that we were able to perform so well today with this young team. We needed ten minutes to get into the game. You could see that Hungary had already played a game and were in rhythm. We had good energy across all four lines, played a good penalty kill and power play. In my view, we deserved to win today. I rate Norway more highly than Hungary, even though they only won in overtime yesterday. The arena is expected to be well attended and that makes us happy. We do not have much time to recover, but above all we are looking forward to taking the next step.”
